Scarce Imperial Danzig Gewehr 98 Sniper - 1917 mfg
Description: For sale is a rare Imperial German Gew 98 Sniper made during the First World War by the Danzig Arsenal. Roughly 18,000 rifles were converted to snipers during WW1 but many would not survive the end of the war and we seldom see many in the US. The rifle is overall in good condition with honest wear throughout many of the parts. The barrel retains a lot of its original bluing. The receiver is worn and dark with patina. The scope also has a layer of patina throughout. The rifle has visible matching serial numbers but please see the note ** below. The stock is in good condition without any cracks or breaks. The proofs on the bottom of the stock are still visible along with the serial number. The bore is fairly bright towards the beginning but is dark towards the last half. The rifling is still fairly sharp. The rifle comes with a cleaning rod that measures 12.5" and a case for the scope. The case is stamped "D.C./F.P. 5 5" on the lid. ** We believe the base rifle is a legitimate sniper but the bolt and mounts are not original to this rifle. The bolt originally looks to have been a standard G98 bolt and the handle turned down. The body and knob have been touched up with cold blue and the serial number was ground and restamped.
