MINNESOTA MARKED SPENCER MODEL 1865 BURNSIDE HEAVY BARREL RIFLE CONVERSION
Description: 31 inch heavy octagon barrel chambered in 44 caliber. Bore has strong rifling with very fine roughness throughout. Barrel is a plum/brown patina with sharp corners and clear "BACHNER BROS/ MINNEAPOLIS/MINN" markings. Sights include a German silver blade front and an adjustable notch rear. Case colored receiver has mostly silvered with the balance a smooth dark patina. Action functions properly. Walnut buttstock is in good condition showing numerous handling mars while the forearm has a few cracks and some missing slivers. Buttplate is mostly a gray/brown. This Spencer originally started life as a Civil War saddle ring carbine and was converted to a sporting rifle configuration after the war by Bachner Bros. of Minneapolis, Minnesota. Twin brothers Ernest and Bernard established Bachner Brothers in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the late 1860's. These Spencer conversion rifles were a lower cost alternative to the Henry or early Winchester rifles of the period for settlers on their way westward. This rifle has plenty of character and frontier use. Leroy Merz Antique Firearms specializes in antique and vintage Winchesters and other fine American firearms.
