Minty Model 1865 Spencer Carbine
Description: This is a U.S. federal contract Spencer Model 1865 saddle ring carbine manufactured by the Burnside Rifle Company in 1865. These guns were intended for Civil War issue as an upgrade on the Model 1860 Spencer carbines then in use. The first deliveries were not made until April 1865, too llate to see Civil War use. However, these carbines were subsequently issued to Western cavalry outfits and saw extensive use in the early Indian Wars. Custer's 7th cavalry were armed with these carbines before they were replaced with the Model 1873 trapdoor carbine and Custer's personal Model 1865 Spencer carbine was recently offered at This example is in exceptional original condition as the photos show. The gun appears as an unissued unfired example. The frame shows strong bright case colors on both sides, the barrel retains most of its original blue with some aged thinning from cleaning. The bore and mechanics are like new. The stocks are very fine, no damage except for a few handling dings and the buttstock has an ESA (Erskin S. Allin) inspection cartouche on the left wrist. Roy Marcott's book on Spencers says the ESA cartouce indicates the gun was turned in for a repair and subsequently inspected by Erskine A. Allin and approved for return to service. All screws are fine as well as the original sights. Frame markings are excellent. E-mail me please if you need any other information. SOLD Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Burnside Rifle Co.
