POST-WAR ARSENAL REFURBISHIED SPENCER MODEL 1860 LEVER ACTION CARBINE
Description: Around 50,000 of these carbines were manufactured during the Civil War for the Union Army. This carbine is one of over 11,000 altered and refurbished by the Springfield Armory circa 1867-1874 with relined three-groove rifled barrels for use with both .56-52 or .56-50 ammunition, and fitted with a Stabler cut-off. Standard features include American walnut stocks, load through buttplate tube magazine, saddle bar and ring, single barrel band, blued round barrel, post front sight, folding ladder rear sight, and color case hardened receiver. The receiver bridge has the Spencer 1860 patent legend and the left of the stock is stamped with the inspectors cartouche behind the saddle bar. Condition is about very good overall with the receiver case colors having darkened to a mottled grey patina. The barrel is also a dull grey with scattered freckling. The stocks show heavy use with numerous handling marks and the buttstock having commonly occurring cracks on left side inline with the internal magazine. Action is fine. Rifling is well defined but does have a few patches of heavy pitting. This is a historic gun that probably saw use during the Civil War and then later at points west of the Mississippi.
