Spencer M1860 Carbine **SOLD pending receipt of funds**
Description: **SOLD pending receipt of funds** The .52 caliber, rimfire Spencer M1860 carbine endeared itself to the officers and troops so issued with them both during the Civil War and later on, during westward expansion. The carbine proved durable, easy to operate, resistant to both fouling and the elements, and significantly increased firing rates thanks to the 7-round tubular magazine inserted into the butt end of the stock. Most of these firearms saw heavy use during the war, especially the last year or so. The example for sale here is heavily patinaed, but not heavily pitted. Markings on metal and wood are light, but legible. Nice square cartouche on the right side of the stock along with some heavy handling marks on left side. Lever and block are both stamped 70, action works as intended. Late during the war, some carbines received the Stabler cutoff device that allowed for single-shot firing. After the war (1867-74), Springfield Armory reconditioned around 11,000 carbines, adding a Stabler cut-off and inserting .50 caliber barrel sleeves. The sleeves reduced the rifling grooves from six to three because the smaller diameter, yet higher velocity, round was found to be more stable in flight. Our carbine, late war manufacter, has the Stabler cutoff and a rounded top of the frame (to ease loading during single-shot firing) but it was not sleeved and so remains .52 caliber. The bore is still in good condition with some patches of minor pitting and frosting. See pictures for overall condition. Antique. $70 shipping cost, insured. SOLD Antique: Yes Rifle Caliber: .52 Manufacturer: Spencer Repeating Arms Co. Model: M1860 Carbine Serial Number: 496xx Bore Condition: Good |
