Description:
Hold history in your hands. Spencer Saddle Ring cavalry-issue carbine M1860. Patent markings top of barrelat receiver: 'March 6, 1860 Spencer Repeating Rifle Company, Boston,Mass.' Weright 8-pounds, 4-onces. Does not appear to be the later model 'Burnside' as there is no patent mark 'M 1865' or 'Burnsiode Rifle Company' or 'Stabler cutoff''. All cartouches good to strong. Small 'M' stamped on rear of receiver left side (inspector proof mark-Martin M Johnson?), small 'M' stamped on lever and breech block. Small 'J' stamped on Breech block. Small 'V' stamped on saddle ring tang. Serial number # 21914 This would fall withiin the 1863-1865 contract and likely saw service sometime in learly 1863 or early 1864. No. 56 (56-56) Spencer rimfire cartridge .52 Cal. Research, comparisons, and examinination suggests original, unaltered condition. Lever action, falling breech block. Tubular magazine-fed. 7-shot,.Buttstock, (smooth-faced) Loading door, tube and follower spring in perfect working condition. 20/22-inch barrel measured muzzle to front of receiver), round bright finish with normal age blemishing as pictured, Overall length 39". Perfect tight action, receiver nice uniform plum- brown patina with trace of case-hardening also on breech-block. No pitting or dings. Very good original walnut stock and iron-banded shortened forestock with what looks like saddle abrasions (?) on left side of buttstock. Minor small cracks in forestock and a small gouge. Very good wood to metal fitment generally. Saddle ring.sling swivel, steel blade front sight with rear folding graduated sight to 800 yards. Excellent bore with six-groove rifling. A very fine example of first metallic cartridge Civil War era repeating rifle that was almost certainly used on the battlefield.
