1922 Springfield MI Profusely Engraved, Custom made for "H. A. Maxam
Description: 12/27/23--NOTE: SALE PENDING to Jeff. Up for sale is a lavishly engraved 1922 with a Mannlicher styed stock and carved wood. See all pictures. The gun features gold and silver line work, and a sliver inlay on the front bridge of the receiver. Make sure to look at all the pictures carefully. At one point I thought I knew who did the engraving, a deceased engraver, Floyd Warren, of Cortland, Ohio. However, I really don't know for sure who customized the gun, or, who engraved it. I have not taken the gun apart due to the fact that the screws are so nice that I don't want to put even a "whisper" of a turn mark in them. If carefully taken apart, there may be identification on the wood or metal. Someone spent a great deal of time with the spoon type bolt handle and the intricate silver line work therein. There is plenty of wood along the sides of the gun and back of the buttstock. If someone wanted to make the stock more "Traditional," they could carefully remove the inlays, sand the carvings down and refinish the stock. Or, the gun could be kept simply the was it is. The inlays on the butt and grip cap could be removed. A simple red or brown recoil pad would increase the LOP of the gun. I need a scope on a gun. To drill and tap this gun with the engraving and inlays would be "Criminal." The oval in the stock is unengraved. In the 1920's and 1930's, which many people believe was "The Goldern Age" of gunmaking, the best custom made rifles often times had ovals left unengraved, and, additionally, the Owner's Initials would be on the trigger guard or the floorplate, as does this gun. However, I feel that due to the styling of the stock as such, that the gun probably was made up sometime in the 1950's, 60's, or, perhaps early 70's. Someone has stamped a number on the right side of the action--28224. Additionally, there is (what appears to be) a very tiny mark or number after the 4. It is very hard to make out. I have been unable to find of list of dates for the manufacture of the 1922 Springfields by serial number. From what I have read and understand, the 1922 Springfields were made from 1922-1942. Take a good look at all the pictures. Shipping and Insurance are extra. No disassembly of the gun, or other mechanical tinkering with it is permitted. Inasmuch as I have a C&R license, I can do a C&R to C&R transfer to another person that has that license. Even the grip cap screw is engraved. Call or email me if you have any questions. Thank you.
