Antique US Springfield 1816 69 Cal Percussion 28" BRL 1862 Perc Conv
Description:
The U.S. Springfield Model 1816 is a .69 caliber percussion rifle, originally a flintlock musket later converted to percussion ignition. This example features a Hewes & Phillips 1862 percussion conversion and a shortened 28-inch barrel. The lockplate bears an 1829 date, consistent with early 19th-century Springfield Armory manufacture. The rifle retains its smoothbore configuration and traditional single-shot muzzle-loading design typical of the Model 1816 series.
Metal components show faded bluing across exposed surfaces, consistent with age and use. The straight-grip wooden stock remains structurally sound, with no visible cracks or chips noted. The forearm cap and cleaning rod are missing. The percussion lock and hammer assembly are intact, and the action is described as strong. The bore condition is noted as very good for its age. This firearm is used and retains period-correct features from its 19th-century conversion, including the percussion bolster and rear sight arrangement associated with the Hewes & Phillips system.
No serial number is present, as was standard for U.S. military arms of this era. The rifle does not include additional accessories or packaging. Overall, this Springfield Model 1816 percussion conversion represents a mid-19th-century modification of an earlier flintlock musket, combining original Springfield Armory manufacture with Civil War–era percussion technology.
