This is an Allen Conversion of a Springfield 1864 Musket. The Allen conversion was part of a revolutionary shift in firearms technology that saw a shift to self-contained metal cartridges. the Allen conversion took Springfield 1864 muzzle loading muskets and converted them to a breech loader using a trapdoor mechanism. These conversions were used as a stopgap solution to transfer to breech loading firearms in the American military while new purpose built breech loading firearms were designed and put into production.
