WWI Veteran Springfield Rifle Model 1903 30.06 Cal Issued 1919
United States Springfield Armory Rifle, Caliber .30-06, Model 1903, is an American five-round magazine fed, bolt-action service repeating rifle, Springfield Model 1903 SN 981915. The year of issue is 1919 with Springfield barrel marked SA and dated 9-18 marked with a flaming bomb. The receiver has an additional gas port ("Hatcher Hole" - dubbed after Army Ordnance Officer Julian Hatcher, the US Marines decided this procedure was to be done on all rifles on the left side of the receiver). Some Army issued 1903's have the Hatcher Hole as well.
Great metal finish throughout. Stock is a veteran with numerous handling marks yet no cracks or deep gouges. Crossed cannon cartouche on left side of receiver, P on inside of grip, N on end of grip. Apparently has been stored for some time as remnants of Cosmoline rust proofing grease are still on it. Bore is immaculate with no pits or rust. No rust or corrosion on metal. To have a barrel of the quality seen, given the history, is amazing.
