Fine WWII U.S. Arsenal Rebuild 1903 Mk I .30-06 Rifle Slotted for Pedersen Device
SALE PENDING

Description:
Fine WWII U.S.  Arsenal Rebuild 1903 Mk I .30-06 Rifle Slotted for Pedersen Device
Offered here for sale and just acquired is a very fine Springfield Model 1903 .30-06 rifle  with arsenal rebuild in 1942. A U.S. Issue Model 1903 .30-06 rifle serial number 1106473 it was rebuilt during WWII for government use and slotted for the Pedersen device. The specimen has a 25" barrel with parkerized finish and stamped with the date 4-42 on the barrel. Bore is excellent and the rifle appears to have seen only light use. Fine example of a WWII U.S. Arsenal rebuild 1903 rifle.
The “slot” refers to an ejection port cut into the left side of the receiver. This modification is the defining feature of the M1903 Mark I . It allowed spent casings from the Pedersen device to eject properly . The stock was also slightly relieved (cut) underneath that port for clearance . A standard M1903 does not have this slot—only the Mark I variant does.
The Pedersen device (officially U.S. Automatic Pistol, Caliber .30, Model of 1918) was a drop-in conversion unit that replaced the rifle’s bolt.
With it installed the rifle fired a pistol-type cartridge (.30-18 Auto) instead of .30-06.  In effect, it turned a bolt-action rifle into something closer to a proto–submachine gun.
The concept was developed late in World War I intended for trench assaults. Soldiers could use bolt-action .30-06 for long range and swap in the device for rapid fire in assaults. The plan was to deploy it in a major 1919 offensive—but the war ended before it could be used.
The parkerized finish is correct for WWII-era refinishing. Some small parts on many examples remained blued (common in rebuilds). Unmarked replacement stock is very typical on many. During WWII, rifles were pulled from storage, rebuilt to serviceable condition, and reissued for service. They were not concerned with collector “correctness” — only function. Also many arsenal rebuild stocks were left without inspector cartouches, especially late-war replacements.
A legitimate WWII arsenal rebuild. By May 1944, the U.S. was deep into WWII production of the M1 Garand, but 1903 rifles were still being rebuilt for training and sniper use. It represents a WWII-era refurbishment of a WWI receiver slotted for the Pedersen sniper device, which is historically interesting in its own right.
