This fine 1858 dated Springfield Model 1855 rifle-musket is equipped with the desirable long range rear sight. The 40"" round 58 caliber barrel has an excellent bore with bright, strong rifling. The barrel is nicely polished bright with areas of light staining and roughness around the nipple. It is dated 1858 and has the VP over eagle inspection and proof. The lock is is bright and is marked U.S. over SPRINGFIELD at the front and 1858 at the tail. The Maynard tape primer door has a strong eagle stamping. The tape priming mechanism is intact and functional and there is even a tape primer present. The bands are smooth an bright. The US marked buttplate is bright with light roughness. The stock is fine with good edges, no cracks or chips, scattered issue dents and dings, and a strong ESA cartouche on the left flat. The swivels and ramrod are present. The tompion is modern. The action functions correctly. The Model 1855 bayonet is very good overall. This very nice rifle musket with its long rang rear sight would fit any Civil War rifle musket collection.
