This U.S. Springfield Model 1870 50-70 caliber trapdoor rifle could be restored. The 32"" (shortened approx. .5"") barrel has a good bore with bright rifling that shows firing wear. The gun has an overall brown patina. The breechblock is from the later 45-70 Model 1973 rifle (DO NOT FIRE AS IS). The lock is dated 1863 which is correct for the early trapdoor rifles as they used Civil War locks. The rear sight, missing the slide, is correct for the Model 1870. The stock is good with issue wear. The ramrod is a replacement and the swivels are present. The action functions correctly.
