U.S.N. Springfield Model 1870 .50-70 Centerifire rolling block rifle. 32⅝" Round barrel with stud for saber bayonet on underside. Excellent bore. Metal, which was originally bright, has a smooth gray/ brown patina. Stocks are very good with no cracks or chips. Right-side of the receiver has an eagle over “USN" over “Springfield" over “1870". Navy rejected the first batch of rifles because the rear sight was too close to the receiver. This is one of the Navy-accepted rifles with the rear sight 3⅛" in front if the receiver. These later rifles do not have the anchor or inspection markings seen on the rejected rifles. This is a correct Navy-issued rifle
