Antique CITY of PHILADELPHIA Springfield M1816 MILITIA MUSKET A. WURFFLEIN
1852 Bolster Conversion Just Before Civil War
Description: Antique CITY of PHILADELPHIA Springfield M1816 MILITIA MUSKET A. WURFFLEIN 1852 Bolster Conversion Just Before Civil War Here we present an antique Springfield U.S. Model 1816 Musket, manufactured in Springfield, Massachusetts circa 1819. This example is marked “CITY OF PHILADA” and “A. WURFFLEIN” on the breech, indicating that Andrew Wurfflein of Philadelphia did the Bolster Conversion for the Pennsylvania Militia. He did these conversions circa 1852. His work involved cutting out the old breech and vent and joining a new breech with a large nipple bolster. The lock still shows the remnants of the old brass flash pan. Frizzen hardware was removed and the holes filled and filed down flush. The original Springfield markings remain. These are neat because these were early American infantry muskets that continued to be kept at the ready in local armories all the way through the American Civil War. The M1816 was in production at Springfield (325,000) and Harpers Ferry (350,000) between 1816 to 1844 with around 675,000 muskets produced during this run. Additionally, more than a dozen contractors also made Model 1816 Muskets during its production years, adding more than 146,000 muskets for a grand total of 821,421 Model 1816 Muskets produced. It saw service during the Mexican-American War and was even pressed into service during the Civil War in both the updated percussion and the old flintlock format. The overall condition is good. Strong action. Smooth bore with patina. The stock is solid, showing use, and still showing inspection markings. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 40-3/4 inches. Caliber: .69 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
