Offered here for sale and just acquired from a very fine arms collection is this authentic all original scarce 2nd Model Allin conversion Model 1866 Trapdoor .50-70 rifle.
The U.S. Springfield Model 1866 Allin Conversion, often called the "Second Allin Conversion", is one of the most historically important military rifles of the post-Civil War era. It marked the U.S. Army's transition from muzzle-loading muskets to metallic-cartridge breechloaders and was the direct ancestor of the famous Springfield Trapdoor rifles of the 1870s.
After the Civil War, the U.S. government had enormous stocks of Model 1861 and Model 1863 Springfield rifled muskets. Rather than build entirely new rifles, Master Armorer Erskine S. Allin designed a conversion system that transformed existing muzzle-loaders into breech-loaders. The first attempt was the Model 1865, but it proved overly complicated. The improved Model 1866 featured a stronger trapdoor breechblock, better extractor system, and the new .50-70 Government centerfire cartridge.
Approximately 52,000 Model 1866 rifles were produced by converting Civil War muskets. The original .58 caliber barrels were bored out, fitted with a .50 caliber liner, and chambered for the powerful .50-70 Government cartridge. Most retained their original Civil War lockplates dated 1863–1865. (this one 1864) and most importantly `for collectors maintained its full length with 3 barrel bands.
Military Significance
The Model 1866 earned its reputation during the Indian Wars. It played a major role in the famous Wagon Box Fight and Hayfield Fight in 1867. Small groups of soldiers armed with the new breechloaders successfully resisted much larger Sioux and Cheyenne forces. The greatly increased rate of fire compared to muzzle-loaders was a decisive advantage.

The Model 1866 occupies a unique place in U.S. military arms history because it was the first widely issued U.S. Army centerfire cartridge rifle. A direct bridge between Civil War muskets and the famous Model 1873 Trapdoor. An important participant in early Indian Wars campaigns. A rifle literally built from Civil War veterans.
The rifle is in overall very good to fine condition with the metal exhibiting a smooth grey patina. The bore is excellent. The wood is excellent as well with a minimum of storage/use marks. A very special addition to any Springfield trapdoor collection and especially those who collect U.S. primary weapons.
