Vintage Custom Springfield 1884 Trapdoor Rifle in .45-70 Government
Description:
What started out as an excellent original condition Springfield 1884 Trapdoor rifle has been transformed into an extremely nice custom sporting rifle. When this was customized we do not know for sure but it appears to be vintage, maybe the 1970's. This really cool custom rifle has a very attractive and graceful look to it, with a very nicely shaped stock and beautiful original finishes still intact on the action. The gloss blue factory finish on the barrel, lockplate, and hammer rates 95%, while the original Springfield case colors on the breech block and upper tang are really spectacular and bright. The barrel has been shortened to 27.5" inches and has a mirror-bright bore with sharp rifling throughout. The original adjustable Buffington rear sight was retained, while the front sight was replaced with a custom front sight with a removable blade insert (currently a post with a see-thru donut). The triggerguard on this rifle is a modified original Trapdoor part that has been customized to a long curved tang that fits the pistol grip of the stock. It appears to have been cut, shaped, and welded to this form. The result is very comfortable and has a very nice profile from the side. The trigger itself remains a stock part that has been lightened to break with a light pull. The stock on this custom Trapdoor rifle is a beautiful hand-made American Walnut piece, with very pleasing lines and a pistol grip design. The butt of the stock is fit with a modified Springfield Model 1922 checkered steel buttplate, and the rifle has military sling swivels mounted on both the barrel band and keel of the buttstock. The stock is in excellent condition overall, free from any cracks or major damage. The only real deduction we can find is one small chip missing on top of the buttstock at the buttplate, opposite what looks like a knot in the wood. There is a close-up picture provided so you can see for yourself. The length of pull on this rifle is 13.5" inches to the end of the buttplate. All of the controls on this unique vintage custom are in perfect working order, and the breech block and action function like-new. This custom .45-70 rifle should be a superb rifle, accurate, powerful, and fun to shoot. If you have been looking for something unique to add to your antique gun collection, this custom Springfield 1884 Trapdoor would be an excellent choice. It certainly is the only one we have ever encountered!
