**SOLD**Springfield Armory Model 1899 Bolt Action Carbine in .30-40 Krag (.30 Army) Caliber **Mfg 1901 - Carbine Version with Correctly Marked
Description: **SOLD** Here we have a Springfield Model 1899 Krag bolt action carbine chambered in .30-40 Krag. The Springfield Model 1892–99 Krag–Jørgensen rifle is a Norwegian-designed bolt-action rifle that was adopted in 1892 as the standard United States Army military longarm, chambered for U.S. caliber .30-40 Krag cartridges. All versions and variants were manufactured under license by the Springfield Armory between 1892 and 1903 and famously served as the longarm during the Spanish–American War. Although "Krags" were popular, unique and efficient, the side loading gate mechanism was slow and cumbersome to reload in combat compared to the clip loaded Spanish Mausers the Krag was up against. Thus, the U.S. Krag was replaced beginning in 1903 with the introduction of the M1903 Springfield rifle, which was essentially a copy of a Mauser, although some design elements of the Krag remained, such as the cocking piece. This particular example is in very good overall condition considering it was made in 1901. The metal components have worn to a very handsome warm grey patina. The wood has also taken on the look of old walnut that has been treated and maintained for many years...possibly with linseed oil. There is of course some high edge wear and handling marks on the carbine. Everything works exactly as it should. The barrel has a decent bore with some frosting. There is one crack on the front of the top handguard that does not affect funtionality. The rear sight is the proper 1901 carbine model. The way the sight is used is very interesting and there are resources to be found that explain the proper use.....the "B" position is the standard battle setting ( as seen on the left side of the sight's lower frame). This fine Springfield would make a great addition to a collection of US Army rifles. PRICE: SOLD We are Antique & Modern Firearms in Lexington, KY, a dealer of fine firearms since 1974.
