Antique SPRINGFIELD ‘68 TRAPDOOR .50-70 GOVT Rifle
Description: Antique SPRINGFIELD ‘68 TRAPDOOR .50-70 GOVT Rifle 1864 Dated Lock and 1869 Dated Breech! Here we present a Springfield Model 1868 Trapdoor Rifle, made circa 1869 in Springfield, Massachusetts for the U.S. Military. The Trapdoor Rifle was the primary weapon in the U.S. military from the end of the Civil War to the end of the 19th Century, encompassing the Indian Wars and even the Spanish-American War in Cuba. It was still being used when the Springfield 1903 was adopted. These rifles were initially made by converting muzzle loading Civil War muskets to single load cartridges from the breech by installing a “trapdoor”. Later iterations were purpose built from the ground up and chambered for .45-70 GOVT, but these early conversion examples were chambered for the even more massive .50-70 GOVT. The lock is dated “1864”, hearkening back to its use during the American Civil War, and the front is marked “EAGLE/U.S./SPRINGFIELD”. Barrel and receiver are serial numbered on the left side. The left stock flat has a total of 4 good government inspector cartouches. 2 are from the initial inspection of the musket as it entered service during the Civil War, and 2 are from the conversion to .50-70 GOVT. “ESA” is for Erskine S. Allin who invented the trapdoor conversion that was used in this rifle! This one also includes the markings “13/B” a unit marking on the left side of the butt stock. The overall condition is very good. The iron parts have a mixed patina with some darker spots throughout. The markings are clear. The stock is in great shape. The bore is bright with nice rifling. The action is strong. Here is a rifle that would have been issued in the late-1860s to troops heading West to tame the wilds. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
