Historic Documented Springfield Trapdoor Cadet Rifle from Remington Arms Museum Collection
Description: Historic Documented Springfield Trapdoor Cadet Rifle from Remington Arms Museum Collection Offered here for sale and just acquired is an historic antiqueSpringfield Model 1873 Trapdoor .45-70 rifle acquired from a prestigious arms collection and documented as having been a part of the Remington Museum collection of firearms. This specimen was part of the esteemed John Amber Collection within the Remington Arms Museum and was deaccessioned from the collection when it was sold off in 1948. We have recently acquired and sold a number of arms from this same collection. The John T. Amber Collection at the Remington Arms Museum was a significant assembly of firearms and related artifacts, reflecting Amber's profound impact on the world of firearm collecting and literature. The rifle carries an inventory Tag number – a brass plate marked #273, corresponding to its museum catalog number. It was also listed in one of Remington’s inventories as CADET model. The Cadet Model of the Springfield 1873 was a distinct variant intended not for regular infantry use, but for military cadets / training schools (e.g., West Point and state military academies). These rifles were made with specific, subtle changes compared to standard infantry rifles: Cadet rifles had a shorter barrel — about 29.5 inches instead of the infantry rifle’s ~32.5 inches The shorter barrel made the rifle somewhat lighter and more manageable for younger, less experienced shooters — ideal for practice and instruction. Most cadet rifles have thinner stocks, narrower wrist areas. They were intended for use primarily in training contexts, rather than frontline service — although some undoubtedly ended up in active use or later military storage and redistribution. They were produced in much smaller numbers than standard infantry Trapdoors. John Amber was the longtime editor of Gun Digest and a respected firearms historian and collector. This specimen was acquired decades ago into a private collection acquired at the sale of the John T. Amber collection of firearms in 1986 by Bourne Galleries. We will offer a documentation letter from Hansen & Hansen, our well-known firearms and appraisal firm, confirming its acquisition from the museum and collection lineage. A superb collectible which should occupy a lofty position in any firearms collection particularly those who specialize in Springfield trapdoor arms and Remington arms related collections. The specimen appears to be UNFIRED and retains virtually all of its original blued finish on barrel (slightly thinning in spots) and case colors are very prominent. The bore is about MINT. Just some subtle storage marks in places. We would rate the specimen at 99% condition. MM98xx Thanks for your bid.
