Exceptional condition Springfield model 1903
National Match mfg 1920
Description:
This is an exceptional condition rare Springfield model 1903 National Match. This one was manufactured in 1920 and is one of 3000 manufactured between 1919 and 1920
The 1919-1920 Springfield Model 1903 National Match rifles were specially selected, hand-fitted service rifles optimized for military competitions. Before dedicated national match production began in 1921, these early variants featured refined triggers and polished actions built directly by the Springfield Armory and Rock Island Arsenal.
These early model national match guns were only available to Military marksman for use in competition. They were returned annually to Springfield armory to be checked for tolerances.
Distinctive Features & Design
The 1919 and 1920 match rifles are prized by collectors for their unique manufacturing characteristics, which bridge the gap between World War I standard-issue rifles and the official commercial National Match runs that followed.
Hand-Fitted Components: Unlike standard issue models, these rifles featured meticulously honed cocking cams, polished receiver runways, and smooth in-the-white bolts to ensure crisp, reliable operation.
The Serrated Trigger: A defining mechanical trait of 1919–1920 models is the use of a serrated trigger, which was specific to match rifles before being dropped in later variations.
Barrels: These rifles featured highly accurate, "star-gauged" barrels to measure dimensional perfection, although the distinct star-gauge muzzle stamp was not officially adopted until late 1921.
Stock & Sights: They were generally equipped with standard "S" stocks and finely checkered buttplates, omitting the 2850-yard volley sight notch found on standard service rifles.
The 1920 Match Production
During Fiscal Year 1920, the Springfield Armory specifically manufactured 3,000 Model 1903 rifles strictly for the 1920 National Matches. While they lacked the later star-gauge stamping, they incorporated all the premium hand-polishing and target-grade selection standards of later National Match models
