Springfield 1903 Rifle (Model of 1909) from the Roebling Collection
Description: Serial #83319, .30-06, 24” barrel with a fine, bright bore that has some very mild freckling within the grooves. This is a handsome, Springfield-made rifle, and has a 1-08 dated, SA barrel that retains about 50-60% of the original blue which blends smoothly into a plum-brown patina along the sides of the exposed portions. There is some further minor silvering at the muzzle and on the sides of the front sight base. The receiver has a commensurate amount of the original blue remaining with some mottled freckling along the edges and a handful of small plum-brown spots flanking the Springfield Armory marking. The original straight-handled bolt matches the condition of the rest of the rifle, and has the correct punch mark on the underside, while the rear sight is the correct, 2700 yard variant. The high-wood walnut stock is correct and does not have recoil bolts, while the correct “C.C.V.” cartouche and serifed “P” proof are still crisp and clear. There are some minor handling marks and bruises on the wood, most noticeably a series of minor bruises flanking the receiver and towards the buttplate, and the handguard does not have the sighting groove on the hump. The trigger guard and floorplate assembly have a small amount of original blue remaining with the balance having a mottled plum-brown and gray patina. An old brass collection tag is present on the trigger guard denoting that this was no. 296 in the famous collection of Ferdinand W. Roebling III; sold on April 28, 2003 by Little John's Service as lot 168 in the sale. This is a terrific example of an early Model 1903 in original .30-06, and would make a great addition to any collection of U.S. military weapons and equipment.
