Springfield 1903 Rod Bayonet 98% condition SEE DESCRIPTION!
Description: What we have here is a fine example of a Springfield 1903 Rod Bayonet that has been plugged and rebarreled as most were when the caliber changed. Receiver is dated roughly to 1906. The barrel dates to 3-08 meaning this gun was originally chambered in .30-03 and featured the rod bayonet. The rifle comes with an original 1909 Marked Rock Island Arsenal Sling. What makes this gun very special was J Sumner Adams, the stock inspector at Springfield mainly famous for his marks on the Krag Jorgenson Rifles was still working at Springfield and for a very short period of time. His typical block letter JSA stamp had broken and he was forced to use his old 1899 stamp with the cursive font exactly like the Krag rifles. This has been confirmed by Springfield armory and we have documents stating this serial number was in that handful of rifles. Keep in mind this is the first one we have ever seen bearing this Marking on the stock. All other proof marks are period and factory correct aside from the JSA. Wood on this firearm is second to none showing the classic darker look these rifles had with no dings dents or scratches. NEVER SANDED Stock cartouches are crisp and deep. This also features the No Sighting Groove Handguard which was scarce and highly collectable. This is a Rock Island grade firearm. Blue finish is near 98% with only some scratches on the trigger guard and magazine baseplate. As well as EXTREMELY light pitting on the bolt handle which has not been modified. The gun is 100% matching including all features and correct stampings for this period of 1903 rifles. The fore end has the plug for the Rod Bayonet (See Pictures). The cartouche on the fore end is very crisp and clear however the lines on the exterior are harder to see. Please see pictures showing the barrel band off the lines are much more visible. Barrel Blue in excellent almost like new. As states before the Rod Bayonet guns are scarce as well as the No Sighting Groove Handguard. Combine this with the stamp only found on a handful of rifles make this potentially one of the most collectable configurations of rifles. The Firearm Ships Insured in a Locked Hard case. We are happy to offer a PPI to any serious buyers if they would like additional pictures or videos. This firearm is an investment and a very rare variation of an excellent condition 1903 Springfield.
