Springfield Armory ~ 1903 Nation Match ~ .30-06 Springfield ~ Made in 1921
Description: This is an excellent example of an early 1921 dated Springfield Armory Model 1903 Nation Match rifle. Note that 1921 was the first year for sales of the Model 1903 National Match rifles to the general public by the Director of Civilian Marksmanship. The rifle has standard Springfield Armory markings on top of the receiver. The barrel is marked "SA / ordnance bomb / 6-21", indicating that this rifle was probably manufactured for the 1922 National Matches. The rifle also has the standard early National Match features such as the arsenal polished and unnumbered bolt, the polished receiver side rails and follower and the barrel that has the star-gauge number "3441" located on top of the barrel under the handguard instead of on the muzzle crown. The bolt is the correct double heated National Match version with the original arsenal polish, which is marked "W3L" on the top with a single punch mark on the bottom. The complete rear sight assembly has been removed and a Lyman 48C receiver sight was added at a later date. Mounted with a post-WWI pattern handguard with "S" pattern stock. The stock has a boxed "W.E.S." cartouche on the left side, a circled "P" proofmark in the pistol grip area, and a small sub inspector's "R" mark stamped in the cut-off recess. The finely checkered service style buttplate was used on National Match rifles prior to 1924. Comes with the original cleaning kit, single stage sear and firing pin assembly. Exceptionally fine. The rifle retains 95% of the original parkerized finish. The barrel bands, sides of the front sight base, general edges and high spots show some thinning and light browning in areas with most of the wear on the trigger guard and floor plate assembly which also shows two small areas that appear to have been touched up. The bolt retains its original polish and has tarnished a little with age. The windage knob on the Lyman sight is bent but still functional. The underside of the forestock has very minor handling marks. The finger grooves have sharp edges with a minor small nick in the right side at the edge, approximately 2 inches in front of the rear sight assembly, the lower left side of the buttstock approximately 1 inch above the rear sling swivel and the left side of buttstock comb shows some surface scratches. The stock and handguard both have a nice even dark color with a clear and distinct cartouche and "P" proof. An exceptional example of an early National Match rifle. .30-06 Springfield SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Chambers: Bolt action repeater Metal Condition: Excellent. Wood Condition: Excellent.
