This Type II (aka Model 1864) percussion Model 1863 rifle musket is distinguished by its solid bands which are retained by band springs. The 40"" round barrel has a fair bore with rough areas. The barrel has a gray-brown patina with roughness around the bolster. The V over P over eagle inspection marks are light but visible at the breech. The lock, hammer, and trigger guard are brown with moderate roughness. The U.S. over SPRINGFIELD and portions of the eagle at the center are visible with part of the 1864 date at the tail discernable. The U.S. marked butt plate and bands are brown. The ramrod and swivels are present. The stock is good with a stable age crack at the rear lock screw and a chip to the rear of the nose cap. The action functions correctly.
