UNION “EVERYMAN’S RIFLE” Primary Infantry Weapon
Description: 1862 Dated CIVIL WAR Antique UNION U.S. Springfield M1861 .58 Rifle-Musket UNION “EVERYMAN’S RIFLE” Primary Infantry Weapon Here we present an antique Springfield Armory Model 1861 Civil War Rifle-Musket, made circa 1862 in Springfield, Massachusetts. The Model 1861 musket was the backbone of Union firepower at the start of the Civil War. Crafted to fire the revolutionary .58 caliber Minié ball, it was a dependable workhorse that symbolized the “everyman’s” rifle. Nearly 1.5 million were produced across the U.S., with over 800,000 coming from Springfield Armory alone. This musket marked the final hurrah of the classic rifle-musket era, packed with cutting-edge technology like the Minié ball— a hollow-based, conical projectile that boosted accuracy and loading speed, transforming battlefield tactics. As the war drew to a close, the military embraced new innovations, shifting to breech-loading rifles and leaving the musket behind. The demand for weapons in those early chaotic days, especially after losing Harpers Ferry, pushed Springfield to its limits. To keep up, over 20 private manufacturers stepped in, churning out more than 643,000 muskets under government oversight, all conforming to the official “model,” with only subtle markings distinguishing them. It was a true mass-production effort driven by necessity and ingenuity. The overall condition is very good. Original bright gray patina. The stock is in fine shape. Robust action. The bore is dim with serviceable rifling. Legible marking. Cartouche remnants are present on the left stock flat. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction.
