Converted to Two-Band “ARTILLERY” Configuration

Here we present an antique Springfield U.S. Model 1863 Rifle-Musket, manufactured at the Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts circa 1863. The Model 1863 was a slight upgrade from the Springfield Model 1861, and some consider it just a variation of the earlier rifle. There were two main versions: Type I, which removed band springs, replaced the flat barrel bands with oval clamping ones, and added a new ramrod, a case-hardened lock, a new hammer, and a redesigned bolster. The Type II, sometimes called the Model 1864, brought back the band springs, switched to solid oval bands, and replaced the three-leaf rear sight with a single-leaf sight. About 255,000 of these Type II rifles were made between 1864 and 1865.
At the start of the Civil War, both the North and South relied heavily on imported rifles. It wasn't until the North adopted the .58 caliber Springfield musket that average soldiers could become more accurate shooters, helping turn the tide of the war. The M1861 became known as the “everyman’s rifle” because of its widespread use—over 800,000 were made by Springfield out of about 1.5 million total U.S. produced rifles. This rifle marked a turning point, featuring the new Minié ball—a hollow, conical projectile that could be quickly loaded and expanded inside the barrel for better accuracy—and the first use of fixed iron sights. After the war, the U.S. military moved away from muzzle-loading muskets to breech-loading rifles, ending the era of the traditional musket in American combat.

This example has an "1863" dated lock, a faint date on barrel, and has been converted to two-band "artillery" configuration. It features a brass buttplate and forend cap with a barrel that has been bored smooth.

The overall condition is good. Light brown/ mottled dark patina. The action is strong. The bore is reflective, dimming toward the muzzle. Solid stock with a stable crack in the butt and a minor chip toward the muzzle by the ramrod. Faint cartouches on the left stock flat. “W P” inscribed on the rear of the right wrist.
