1864 Dated Antique CIVIL WAR Springfield U.S. M1863 Percussion RIFLE-MUSKET .58 Caliber MUSKET Made at the SPRINGFIELD ARMORY
Description: 1864 Dated Antique CIVIL WAR Springfield U.S. M1863 Percussion RIFLE-MUSKET .58 Caliber MUSKET Made at the SPRINGFIELD ARMORY Here we present an antique Springfield U.S. Model 1863 Rifle-Musket, manufactured at the Springfield Armory in Springfield, Massachusetts circa 1864. The Model 1863 was a minor upgrade over the Springfield Model 1861, often seen as just a variant of the 1861. It came in two versions: Type I, which replaced flat barrel bands with oval clamping bands, eliminated band springs, and featured a new ramrod, case-hardened lock, new hammer, and redesigned bolster; and Type II (sometimes called Model 1864), which reintroduced band springs, used solid oval bands instead of clamping ones, and replaced the three-leaf rear sight with a single leaf. At the start of the Civil War, both North and South relied heavily on imported rifles. The North’s adoption of the .58 caliber Springfield musket marked a turning point, transforming the average soldier into a more accurate marksman and helping turn the tide of the war. The M1861 became a symbol of the “everyman’s” rifle, with over 1.5 million produced in the U.S., including more than 800,000 by Springfield. It represented the peak of the rifle-musket era, featuring new technology like the Minié ball—a hollow, conical projectile that expanded to create a tight gas seal—and the first use of static iron sights. After the war, the U.S. military moved on from muzzle-loading muskets to breech-loading rifles, ending the era of the musket as the standard frontline firearm. The overall condition is very good. Original light brown/gray patinas. The stock is in very good condition with faint cartouches on the left stock. Strong action. The bore is dim with worn rifling. Legible markings. This example is dated “1864” on the lock and barrel and has two clear cartouches on the left stock flat. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 40 inches. Caliber: .58 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
