1889 mfg. Antique U.S. SPRINGFIELD M1884 TRAPDOOR .45-70 Rifle INDIAN WARS
U.S. MILITARY Rifle WESTWARD EXPANSION w/SLING
Description: 1889 mfg. Antique U.S. SPRINGFIELD M1884 TRAPDOOR .45-70 Rifle INDIAN WARS U.S. MILITARY Rifle WESTWARD EXPANSION w/SLING Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle, manufactured in 1889 by the Springfield Armory. This rifle was manufactured near the end of the Indian Wars, just one year before the tragic Wounded Knee massacre. Following the Civil War, the US War Department sought a breech-loading rifle that could chamber a self-primed, metallic cartridge. Notably, despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of the trapdoor rifle continued to be produced and used until the mid-1890s, when the Krag-Jorgensen was eventually adopted. As settlers pushed into the Great Plains region, they clashed with Plains Indian tribes in a series of conflicts known as the Sioux Wars, which lasted from 1854 to 1890. The discovery of gold in the Black Hills of South Dakota in 1875 drew prospectors into Sioux territory, leading to tensions and ultimately the Great Sioux War of 1876-77, the last major conflict between the US Army and the Sioux tribe. Despite this tumultuous period, trapdoor rifles remained in use through the Spanish-American War, a testament to their durability and versatility. The overall condition is good.
