1897 Vintage U.S. Military Springfield Krag Model 1896 Rifle in .30-40 Krag Caliber SOLD
Description: The sought-after U.S. Military Krag rifle has become quite hard to find these days in all-original and un-modified condition. The Spingfield Krag rifle was a Norwegian design by Krag-Jorgensen that was adopted for service in 1892 as the standard longarm of our U.S. Military forces. The bolt-action repeater was chambered in the .30-40 Krag cartridge and was unique in that it incorporated a side loading-gate mechanism. Springfield produced both a standard rifle and a carbine version of the weapon. The Springfield Krag proved to be a well-made, reliable, and very accurate weapon in military service in both rifle and carbine form. It proved it's worth in the Spanish American War of 1898 and remained the standard longarm for the U.S. Military until 1903, when the Springfield Model 1903 was adopted to take it's place. During the Krag's production run there were several variations made from the first Model 1892 to the last Model 1899, with each variation having a carbine model and a rifle model. This particular example is a Krag Model 1896 that was made in 1897. It is a very attractive all-original example that has not been modified or altered in any way since leaving the factory. The original gloss-blue finish on all of the metal parts is in great shape overall, except for the bolt and buttplate which were left "in the white" from the factory. As you can see from the pictures, the barrel bands and triggerguard show the most finish wear, with the receiver, barrel, and loading mechanism still showing most of their beautiful blue finish. The bore in this Krag is in excellent condition and bright, a far cry from most Krags we encounter these days. The rifling still shows sharp lands and grooves throughout the bore, and there is no visible pitting, erosion, or imperfections. The original Walnut stock set on this Springfield Krag Model 1896 is very handsome and in great shape overall. Both the handguard and stock show some minor dents, dings, and scratches but are free from any cracks or repairs. The worst spot of damage on the stock is on the left side of the buttstock near the toe of the butt, where there is a small shallow chunk chipped out. As you can see, it doesn't detract too much from the clean overall look of the stock set. The original U.S. Military cartouches are still visible on this rifle, with the inspector's initials and the date of 1897 stamped on the left side of the stock in a box, and a "circle P" stamp on the wrist behind the triggerguard. All of the stock hardware is intact including the original buttplate with the trap for the cleaning rod storage. All of the controls on this Model 1896 are in perfect working order, including the neat precision windage and elevation adjustable rear sight with a flip-up peep aperature. The action on this Krag is slick and precise, and the bolt turns into battery very smoothly. We have no doubt that this Krag rifle would shoot just as accurately and reliably as the day it left the Springfield factory 122 years ago! If you have been looking for a "collector grade" Springfield Krag for your collection this beautiful all-original Model 1896 would be an excellent choice. This rifle has the added bonus of being an antique so it can ship directly to your home, no FFL transfer needed!
