Antique U.S. SPRINGFIELD M1884 “TRAPDOOR” .45-70 GOVT Rifle WOUNDED KNEE
Four Years Prior to the WOUNDED KNEE MASSACRE
Description: Antique U.S. SPRINGFIELD M1884 “TRAPDOOR” .45-70 GOVT Rifle WOUNDED KNEE Four Years Prior to the WOUNDED KNEE MASSACRE Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle, manufactured by the Springfield Armory. This rifle was manufactured in 1886, around the end of the Indian Wars and four years before the Wounded Knee massacre. After the Civil War, the War Department wanted a breech-loading rifle. To be specific, it wanted a breech-loading rifle that would chamber a self-primed, metallic cartridge. Amazingly, despite the adoption of the ill-fated Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese Bolt Action Magazine Rifle, new models of trapdoor rifles continued to be produced and used all the way through the mid-1890s, until finally, the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted. The U.S. continued to see unrest and conflict with the displaced Native Americans during this time, including the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. Trapdoors continued to see use all the way through the Spanish American War. This example has a clear 1886 dated inspector cartouche with the initials “SWP”, for Master Armorer and Ordnance Inspector Samuel W. Porter. The overall condition is good. Smooth dark patina. The action is strong. The bore is bright with strong rifling. The stock is solid with evidence of great use. Legible cartouche on the left wrist. The number “13” is stamped behind the receiver tang. The number “11” is stamped on the right buttstock. Markings are legible. “X 354” marked receiver. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 32-5/8 inches. Caliber: .45-70 GOVT Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail! Guaranteed AUTHENTIC & Includes CERTIFICATE OF AUTHENTICITY. ancestryguns $1600 #250151 Antique: Yes Price: $1,600.00 Buy Now Pay with ![]() Contact Seller |
