Description: c1875 CUSTER ERA Antique SPRINGFIELD Model 1873 US TRAPDOOR Cavalry Carbine Made the Same Year of the Battle of Little Bighorn Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1873 Trapdoor Saddle Ring Carbine in the Custer Range of numbers, made in 1875 by the Springfield Armory. This example would have been manufactured just months prior to the Battle of the Little Big Horn (aka Battle of the Greasy Grass; June 1876) in Montana where Lieutenant Colonel George Armstrong Custer and his men suffered their crushing defeat at the hands of the Lakota and Cheyenne with Custer and much of the 7th Cavalry destroyed, including Custer’s brothers, Boston & Thomas, his brother-in-law, and his nephew. This Model 1873 carbine’s serial number lands in the pre-1876 serial range. The Model 1873 was the first trapdoor variant to be made in the .45-70 GOVT cartridge as opposed to the .50-70 GOVT cartridge of previous rifles by Springfield Armory. Early features this carbine includes are the flush barrel-to-receiver fit, the lack of proofs on the left side of the barrel (this would begin shortly after this carbine was made) and the oil-quenched case hardened breech block. The overall condition is good+. Excellent action. Nice, bright bore with strong rifling. Solid walnut stock with expected wear. This is a later stock that has replaced the old and it does have the cleaning rod trap in the butt stock. “1873” dated trapdoor. “US” stamped lock and butt plate tang.
