Description:
Up for your consideration is an antique Krag Jorgensen Model 1896 Carbine. This carbine features a 22in bbl with excellent rifling and bore. The exterior of the barrel is also great, with only some slight petina in the blue finish and no major scratches or dings in it. The stock is a Springfield affair, however it was clearly part of the 1901 refurbishment of these rifles. To cut costs a lot of stocks were not stamped with the distinct JSA script. It could have also been sanded at some point, but this is unlikely given it lacks the saddle ring mount holes on the side and the P proofmark on the bottom of the grip is still deep and bright enough to be age correct with no major fading. The top piece for the stock is not present along with the band that holds it in place. This gun has NOT been sporterized, still with original barrel length and original stock configuration just missing the top section. The receiver is in good shape but is lacking the blue finish entirely. The bolt and action mechanisms are mint condition with that stereotypical smooth as butter Krag action. The buttplate is original and has some patina to it but still retains the original 3-piece cleaning kit. At some point this Krag was fitted with a Lyman Peep sight. And the ladder sight was removed along with the top stock portion. Overall it is in great shape given it is 100+ years old and an antique. The wood itself is good with minor imperfections and one small chip near the right side of the tang. But it still has that distinct aged look that these rifles are known for.
