Description: Springfield Altered Sharps Model 1870s 16-45 Condition: Finish on Barrel, bbl. Bands and sight is brown-plum 50% case hardening mostly grey/silver/brown a little light corrosion... Wood has some dents, dings, etc. But is overall very attractive. Bore is shiny and 90% rifling. Works fine mechanically. Is very good/fine condition overall; original Sharps Rifle Springfield. Model 1870 Springfield Altered Sharp Rifle and Carbine. Springfield Armory and Sharps Rifle Manufacturing Co. Made c. 1870, I total quantity of about 1,300.50-70 center fire breechloader, 35-1/2” barrel. Walnut stocks, frame, breechblock, lock, lever, trigger plate, and lever catch were casehardened; the barrel, barrel bands, butt plate, sling, swivels, and ramrod were left in the white. The full forend is fastened with two barrel bands (instead of three as on other Sharps military rifles) and it has iron ramrod. Serial numbered on the upper tang of breech and on left side of the barrel. Frame marking: C. SHARPS PAT./SEPT.12TH 1848. On the butt plate: US. This rather scarce variation of the Sharps was not merely an adaptation utilizing existing Civil Was parts. According to Ordnance Reports the Springfield Armory newly fabricated parts necessary to complete these rifles. The basic model on Sharps actions is: First Type; action a conversion from percussion straight breech type includes lock plate marking; R.S.
