Description:
Springfield M1866 Second Model Allin conversion. This rifle was converted to a breech loading, center fire rifle from an M1863 musket after the Civil War. Approximately 25,000 .58 caliber Springfield Model 1863 rifled muskets were converted by Springfield Armory for use by U.S. troops. The barrels were bored out and relined to .50 caliber to fire the 50-70 government cartridge. This particular rifle was cut down to a 30" barrel length at some point in its life, likely by a commerical resaler wanting to appeal to buyers that wanted a shorter rifle than the original. The barrel on this rifle is 30" with a shiny bore. There are only very shallow and minor pits near the muzzle end of the bore, but it otherwise looks excellent for being 160 years old. The rest of the rifle is also in quite good condition for its age. The wood shows only minor imperfections, and the metal shows some pits throughout but nothing of any major concern.
The top of the barrel is stamped "C.A." just after the breech, meaning "Citizen's Association". In 1874 a group of industrialists, professionals, and social activists formed the Citizens Association of Chicago to correct conditions in that city that had been highlighted by the disastrous fire of 1871. This rifle also includes a reproduction sling. No serial number
Shipping, handling and insurance varies on each firearm from $35.00 to $100 depending size, weight and zip code. To be determined after sale.
NOTE: New Jersey does not have a pre-1898 law. ALL guns, including antiques, must be shipped to your out of state FFL or C&R licenses are ok!
