Springfield M1868 Trapdoor .50-70 (1870) - Antique
Description:
For sale is an honest and highly functional
U.S. Springfield Model 1868 Trapdoor rifle, serial number
40037. This specimen is a classic example of the post-Civil War "Third Allin Conversion," manufactured by Springfield Armory using
surplus Model 1863 percussion musket parts.
This rifle correctly utilizes the
M1863 Springfield lock plate (dated 1863) and hammer, integrated with the newly manufactured 1870-dated breech block, receiver and shortened to 32.5 inches, relined to 50-70 Goverment barrel. This is an
"All-Matching" example, with the serial number
40037 crisply stamped on both the left side of the receiver and the barrel.
Highlights of this Rifle:
- Matching Serial Numbers: A rare "All-Matching" specimen with the serial number 40037 crisply stamped on both the left side of the receiver and the barrel.
- Field Performance: This rifle is a great shooter with a pleasant recoil and really satisfying gong reports. It is accurate enough consistently hitting coyote-sized steel target at 150 yards. Note: To hit at 150 yards with modern black powder loads, the ladder sight is typically regulated between the 300 and 500-yard marks .
- Test fire video of this partiqular example: ://youtu.be/cKugwc_2ip4
- Good Bore: The 3-groove rifling is sharp and bright , exceeding the average for this vintage.
- Mechanics: The 1870-dated breech block locks up tight. The extractor remains fully functional, reliably throwing spent brass clear of the chamber.
Condition & Components:
- Metal: Smooth, attractive "frontier" plum-brown patina throughout.
- Wood: Original American Walnut with a rich, dark color and a visible inspector’s cartouche. There is a small, stable hairline crack near the rear lock-plate screw (common for this model), which does not affect structural integrity.
- Included Accessories: Comes with a high-quality reproduction leather sling.
- Lock: Correct M1863-dated Springfield eagle lock plate with a crisp, strong hammer.
- Serviced: Cleaned, oiled and ready to use.
Summary:
This is an honest example of an iconic early Springfield Trapdoor rifle that balances historical collectibility with genuine shootability. Perfect for the historical arms enthusiast and shooters.
