Springfield Model 1888 Trapdoor Rifle
Description: Springfield US Model 1888 Trapdoor Rifle in 45-70 Govt. This was the final version of the single shot trapdoor rifle and arguably the highest quality weapon in terms of fit and finish, ever produced at the Springfield Armory. This is a late one produced in 1892 in the 540,000 serial range....right about the time the US Model 1892 Krag rifle was being introduced. While the 1888 shares a number of components to the co-produced Model 1884 such as the breechblock (which are always marked Model 1884), the Buffington Rear Sight, and the Serrated Trigger, what makes the Model 1888 unique is the bayonet ramrod mechanism underneath the barrel and the solid one piece trigger guard. Overall condition is NRA Antique Excellent with 95% original blue on the barrel, action, bands, and trigger guard. Strong bright original case colors on the breech plug and breech block. The wood is NRA Antique Fine Plus to Excellent with nearly all of the original oil finish intact with sharp "1892" dated cartouche and Circle P stamps. Wood shows only minor handling marks and an old painted rack number (possibly from a US Navy ship) on left side of stock. The bore is Excellent. There are what appears to be an original set of tools in the buttstock. Very strong example of the last version of the Trapdoor Springfield. Price: $2250 Antique: Yes Manufacturer: Springfield Model: Model 1888 Caliber Info: 45-70 Condition: NRA Antique Excellent Contact Seller |
