TRULY ATTIC CONDITION 1894/1896 KRAG RIFLE, #13XXX, MADE 1895.
Description: TRULY ATTIC CONDITION 1894/1896 KRAG RIFLE, #13XXX, MADE 1895. This rifle started life as a first series rod bayonet rifle. About all of these were recalled, had their rods removed and the channel in the stock expertly filled with a wood insert- so well done by Springfield that you have to look closely to see it! Amazing workmanship. Some of these early rifles had their stocks replaced, and of course, these don't have the rod channel. This example has the original stock with a faint 1895 cartouche and a circle P cartouche and the 1896 sight. All the metal surfaces are covered in a dried (petrified!) coating of grease. In the photo it has a yellowish/gold appearance on the bolt. To be sure of this, I put some oil on the extractor on the receiver top and rubbed it lightly with 0000 steel wool. The factory iridescent blue appeared. I stopped cleaning at this point. Whoever buys this one can complete the cleaning or just leave it as is. The receiver appears dark with exc. markings and the barrel appears similarly dark with obvious blue under the coating of dry grease. Wood is generally excellent with one hairline crack beginning at the back corner of the rear sight on the left side- minor. Action is tight and the bore is excellent and bright. Not many found in this condition that looks like it was greased and left for a good 100+ years.
