VERY FINE SPRINGFIELD 1868 .50-70 TRAPDOOR RIFLE, #44XXX WITH 1870 DATED BREECH BLOCK
Description: SPRINGFIELD 1868 .50-70 TRAPDOOR RIFLE, #44XXX WITH 1870 DATED BREECH BLOCK. Only 51,389 of these were made between 1868-1872. These rifles are full of dual history as they started out as issued Civil War .58 caliber muzzle loading Springfields. After the war they had their barrels shortened and lined to .50 caliber. The breech end was then cut and altered to accept the famed "Trapdoor" block and chambered for the powerful .50-70 Government cartridge. At this point they were re-issued mainly for the Indian Wars in the west. When the later Model 1873 Trapdoor .45-70 replaced these .50-70s, many were sold as surplus or provided to frontier posts and actually given, loaned or sold to settlers. This example shows a good and sharp stock cartouche. Lock markings are also sharp and clear with the correct 1864 date left over from the Civil War issue. There is still some good case color on the lock plate. These were finished "bright" meaning not blued and the barrel retains a nice silvery look. Correct original ladder rear sight, tight breech block and action with minty bright bore. The wood overall is fine with only normal light handling/storage marks. Matching serial number on the barrel and breech. A really fine example overall. SOLD Antique: Yes Rifle Caliber: .50-70 Government Manufacturer: SPRINGFIELD Model: 1868 TRAPDOOR Serial Number: 44XXX Barrel Length: 32.5 Condition: FINE+ Bore Condition: EXCELLENT |
