Description:
VERY SCARCE UNALTERED FIRST MODEL 1873 TRAPDOOR .45-70 RIFLE, #50XXX, MADE THE YEAR BEFORE THE CUSTER BATTLE, 1875. These First Model 1873s are seldom encountered as most were returned to arsenals for updates- sights, stocks, breech blocks etc. This one still retains the long wrist/short comb First Model stock with good "ESA" cartouche in the left side of the wrist. It also has the 1873 dated "high arch" breech block, early two-click tumbler (below 78,000 serial number range when they switched to 3-clicks), 1873 dated lock plate, slotless screws in the rear sight etc. About the only way these remained unaltered is if they were stolen, lost in battle or a soldier went AWOL with his rifle- not uncommon in the 1870s. Barrel retains good blue with some dings and brown toward the muzzle section, looks like some numbers were scratched in the side of the barrel on the left side just ahead of the breech- light and hard to see. The correct rear sight is lacking the ladder portion with the base and lower sight notch intact. Has a few dings around the inside edges of the breech when the block is lifted which also are minor. Bore was full of dry rust when I got this one- a few passes with an oily brush and oily patch cleaned much of the brown stuff out leaving good rifling with any roughness fairly surface and probably will clean out more. The lock plate still retains good dark almost black original case color. Stock is solid with some chipping around the front barrel band. Forend shows normal wear and dings with three initials scratched in to the left side ahead of the receiver- old and worn in, wrist is NOT cracked, correct butt plate. Cleaning rod missing, but easily replaced. With old leather sling in fine condition. Not often seen. This one came out of here in Montana.
