Exceptional 1942 Lend-Lease Springfield Armory M1 Garand 30-06 Springfield
Description:
Described by General George S. Patton Jr as "the greatest battle implement ever devised", the M1 Garand was the standard service rifle for the US during World War II, the Korean War, and saw limited service during the Vietnam War. This is a beautiful example of a Springfield Armory M1 Garand chambered in 30-06 Springfield. This WW2 era M1 Garand was manufactured in 1942 by Springfield Armory and is in excellent original condition. This particular rifle was part of the British Lend-Lease Program where quantities of M1 Garand rifles were transferred to England. These transfers continued even after the declaration of war against Japan until a decision in March 1942 that all .30-cal. arms be allotted to the U.S. Army. Transfers were officially terminated at the end of June 1942. In all, a total of 38,001 M1 Garand rifles were shipped to England under the Lend-Lease program to help arm the British Military which was short of weapons. These so-called “British Garands” have become highly sought after by collectors. M1 Garands procured throught this program had to be proofed according to British law and this particular rifle's proofing was done by the Birmingham Proof House. First in line is the nitro proofmark which indicated which proof house did the proofing. The first Birmingham mark is a crown over the letters BNP for British Nitro Proof. Second is the caliber which Birmingham marked “.30/06.” Third is the length of the cartridge case in inches which Birmingham recorded the decimal length as 2.494". Fourth is the pressure of the nitro proof charge in tons per square inch which Birmingham used the notation “18 TONSPER.” Birmingham also added a fifth mark, crossed swords with the number of various inspectors and a date code letter, which is not seen on "British Garands" proofed by the London Proof House. This beautiful March of 1942 produced M1 rifle is in outstanding original condition and would be hard to improve upon. The finish is original and shows little to no wear. The original barrel is dated 3/42 and the breech is in the white. The muzzle of the barrel measures a 1 and the throat a 2, which is essentially As New with zero blemishes. The original stock is in excellent condition including the proper G.H.S. inspector's cartouche. The front sight on this rifle still has the factory screw-seal, which seldom remains on M1 Garands of this vintage. The action is slick and tight, and the bore looks as if it just left the assembly line. This rifle is all period-correct, original, and parts-matching with correct drawing numbers on all small parts. The original -3 SA op rod is correct and uncut. The rear sight elevation knob, which according to Harrison's book titled "Collecting the Garand", should be checkered rather than knurled like this one. This could be easily changed by the new owner if he or she should choose, however it appears as if it has been on this gun since it left the factory. Also included with the rifle is a rare Hickock Leather manufactured M1907 sling which was only produced for one year in 1943. This "British Lend Lease Garand" is a must-have for any M1 Garand collector as a rifle in such original and exceptional condition rarely comes up for sale. Note: We guarantee this fine M1 Garand to be as described. We would be glad to answer any questions or provide additional pictures of any sub-assemblies or small parts upon request.
