Springfield 1898 Krag, 30-40 Rifle - Manufactured in 1901/2
Description: The year of manufacture of this Springfield 1898 Krag .30-40 rifle is either 1901 or 1902. It is stamped 1902 on the left side of the stock, just above the trigger. However, Springfield records show that this serial number, 290702, was manufactured in 1901. There are two possibilities tp explain this apparent mismatch. One is that the stock was switched out at some. The second as explained by an internet source citing the Springfield Research Service book, said that barreled actions were not stocked until they were about to be issued. Thus, the barreled action of this gun would have been manufactured in 1901, but not fitted to a stock until 1902. I must say that the stock is well fitted to this gun. There are no papers or other accessories with this rifle. The bolt, with extractor removed, passed a NO-GO headspace check. The left side of the receiver (bolt housing) is stamped, “U.S.“ (first line). Just below that is stamped “MODEL 1898. SPRINGFIELD ARMORY. 290702”. A cartouche is stamped on the left side of the stock (wrist) just above the trigger; it reads the JSA (inspector’s initials) with 1902 below; both lines are inside a rounded square. A second cartouche is stamped on the bottom of the stock, about an inch behind the trigger guard. I believe it is the letter “P” inside a circle. The overall condition of this gun is about 80 to 85 percent owing mostly to the condition of the wood. The metal (receiver, operating handle, bolt, magazine floor, bayonet stud, barrel, sights, trigger, and trigger guard) is at least 90 percent, with no rust and very few mars. The stock bears the dents, scratches, and mars of its 122 years of age. The most significant issue with this rifle is that at some point, someone etched his driver’s license number - DL# 0733468 - on the loading gate/door (right side of the receiver). The photos are high resolution, so zoom to see details. Contact me for additional photos of any area you would like to see or see better.
