Springfield 1898 Krag .30-40
Description: This was probably the best 1898 Krag we have ever had the opportunity to own, but in its recent move from Connecticut to Florida it was damaged by the moving company. So sad, but definitely restoreable with the right wood man. There were two chips in the wood, the first on the corner of the top guard as shown in the photos along with the full chip - which can be put back in place if done correctly by a good stockmaker. The second chip is missing - the piece just forward of the magazine cutoff (see photo). That one will be a bit more difficult but it still can be done by the right artisan. Why go to the trouble? Because this is an exceptional 1898 Krag, with only minor storage and handling marks but otherwise probably unfired condition. Never had a nicer one and I've owned scores of Krag rifles in my 57+ years full time in the business. If you are able, or if you know someone who is a master at the woodworking craft this rifle may be for you. The proper repairs will double the value.
