Springfield Armory ~ 1896 ~ .30-40 Krag
Description: This 1898 right-hand bolt action rifle is a U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1896 apparently chambered in .30-40 Krag. It has a fixed brass-topped torpedo blade front, an adjustable graduated ladder-style rear sight, a 30" round barrel, a full length finger groove forearm, a straight stock, a curved smooth trigger, a side-loading pop-open 5-round magazine assembly, a steel butt plate with a trap door for a cleaning kit (no cleaning kit included), a bayonet mount, a straight non-swept bolt handle, and sling loops top, middle and bottom. This Krag rifle features a magazine cut-off that allows it to function as a single-shot arm, with the magazine's ammunition supply kept in reserve. It has a walnut stock with inspector cartouche and circle P cartouche. Named for its inventors, Norwegian Royal Artillery officer Ole Hermann Johannes Krag and civilian Erik Jorgensen, the Krag-Jorgensen rifle was the first small-caliber smokeless power repeating long arm to be adopted by the U.S. Army. Aside from its superiority in ordnance tests, the Krag, as it is commonly known, was extremely reliable and could easily be field-stripped and re-assembled without the need for tools. Despite its success during initial field trials, American arms makers opposed the selection of a foreign design and successfully agitated for a second round of tests against American-made magazine arms, including the Remington-Lee, the Chaffee-Reese, and the Hotchkiss Bolt Action Rifles. Once again, the Krag emerged as the winner. It comes with a modern ammo belt, a fabric gun sock, and a military style leather sling. .30-40 Krag SOLD Curio/Relic: Yes Metal Condition: "Given the age, the finish on the metal is in very good condition, with no observable rust or pitting Wood Condition: "Butt stock shows a light thin crack, observable on both sides, the finish otherwise is in fair to good condition Barrels: 30" round barrel Triggers: Smooth curved trigger Stock Dimensions: "13⅜"" LOP, overall length 49¼"" Fore End: "Full length finger groove forearm, straight butt stock Butt Pad: Steel butt plate with trap door for cleaning kit (no cleaning kit present) Weight: 9 lbs 2 oz Sights: "Fixed brass-topped torpedo blade front, adjustable graduated ladder-style rear sight Item Location: Wichita, KS |
