Description: Krag Jorgensen Carbine – Model 1898 Purchased directly from the owner in 1969. It had been in a residential location for years. Since then, it has always been stored / displayed in a temperature / humidity-controlled environment. Age appropriate moderate patina on the bright metal. There is moderate oil residue build-up in the creases and tight areas. That doesn’t bother me, because I am oriented towards maintaining originality. The new owner may think differently? The barrel is bright and shiny, throughout. With minor wear. The barrel retains much of the bluing (+90%). This sometimes suggests an arsenal refinish? But it does not have the black oil quenched case color refinish / rebuilt look? And, the markings on the left side of the receiver are crisp and clear. Not muddled, like an arsenal refinished example. The fit and finish is very good. And the bolt action is tight and very smooth. The stock is very good condition. Some blemishes and scratches. No paint. No “gashes”. The bluing is +90%. The butt plate shows some very minor rust. But nowhere else. Details: The serial number correctly falls into the carbine range (222609-362256). Cartouche is clearly dated 1898. So, probably a very early model 1899? A circled stylized script "P" is stamped behind the trigger guard. The left side receiver markings are crisp and not blurred. The stock meets every description that I can find, for an “as-issued” Carbine. The blade front sight is mounted on the correct high stud. The rear sight ladder is graduated from 02 to 20. A “c’ is stamped on the right side. There are a lot of Krag enthusiast in the Community. Corrections and comments are welcome.
