Springfield Model 1896 Krag Bannerman Style Sporter .30-40 Krag w/Accessories
Description: This is a nice example of a sporterized M1896 Krag. According to the book The American Krag Rifle and Carbine (3rd Edition) by Joe Poyer, this Krag started life in April of 1897 as a rifle rather than a carbine, as the serial number falls outside of any of the known serial ranges of the M1896 carbine. Like most of its kind, after military service it was sporterized in what is generally referred to as the “Bannerman” style. Bannerman was a firearms dealer who would buy old U.S. military rifles as near-scrap value and sporterize them before selling them to the civilian populace. It is not guaranteed that Bannerman did the work on this rifle, as other outfits like Stokes Kirk sold similarly modified Krag rifles. The Model 1903 Springfield front sight can be found frequently on Bannerman rifles but was an available option for Kirk rifles as well. The stock is an original Krag stock that has been modified, as it has the remnant of the J.S.A. (J.S. Adams) inspector stamp on left side. Since the stock was refinished, it is difficult to determine the year other than it was stamped in the late 1890s, as only the first and third numbers are readily discernible. A few repairs have been made to the stock over the years, which appear to have been done by a competent gunsmith. The handguard appears to be an aftermarket custom piece, as original Krag fore ends had rivets to hold the clips in place. The clips helped hold the original style fore ends to the barrel. This handguard is held on by the barrel band. The rear sight has a max setting of 1,800 yards. The rifle sports a good-looking grey patina. Pitting has been kept to a minimum. As always, the bolt movement is very smooth. This Krag rifle comes with a box of once-fired brass and a set of reloading dies.
