The 45 Government caliber (45-70) Springfield Model 1888 trapdoor ramrod bayonet rifle was the last of the trapdoor models. The bore is very good with bright rifling and frosting in the grooves. All the metal has a smooth brown patina. The correct Model 1884 rear sight is present. The stock is very good with a chip missing along the ramrod channel. The SWP 1892 final acceptance stamp and firing proof stamp are clear. There is a small W lightly cut into the stock between the trigger guard tang and firing proof. The buttplate is a fairly crude incorrect replacement. The swivels and rod bayonet are present. The action functions correctly. Many of these rifles were used during the Spanish-American War.
