**SOLD** 1881 Vintage Springfield Model 1877 Trapdoor Carbine in .45-70 Gov't Caliber
* Original Trapdoor Carbine w/ Unit Marking? **
Description: This is a nice original Springfield Model 1877 Carbine that was manufactured and inspected in 1881. The serial number is fairly early at 125796, well before a number of changes were made during the production run of this famous Cavalry carbine. This carbine would have been made and issued right in the middle of the U.S Indian Wars and there is no telling what American history it has witnessed! As you can see form the pictures, the whole carbine has a very even aged patina showing on all of the metal parts and wood. The factory blue finish on the barrel is mostly turned to a brown-blue patina, showing some scattered dings in the metal, mainy on the bottom. What these dings are from we have no idea, they can be seen in pictures 24 and 11. The lockplate still shows a lot of blue finish but all of the factory case colored parts have mostly faded away to a gray-brown patina. All of the Springfield markings are still fully intact and 100% visible, as-are the inspection proofs on the metal and the stock cartouche which consists of an "SWP" over "1881" in an oval on the left side of the stock above the trigger. There is a stamping on top of the front section of the trapdoor assembly that we are unsure of it's meaning. It may be a unit marking or could be a company marking of some sort? It consists of a "U" with a smaller "F" inside of it over the number "69". There is a close-up of this marking in picture #18. The bore in the 22" inch barrel is in average/below average condition, showing rifling throughout but also scattered pitting throughout the bore. The correct sights are still intact on the barrel, consisting of a pinned front sight blade within a soldered square base. The rear sight is the second type used on these carbines, marked "C" in two places like mentioned before, but also with a redesigned notch on top of the blade and a redesigned notch at the bottom to set down on the centering pin at the base of the ladder style flip-up. The sight works fine in the down position or when it is resting on the ramp out to 800 yards, however when you flip the ladder all the way up to use a sight setting above 800 yards the sliding sight blade is a little loose on the ladder. The original stock set on this Trapdoor Carbine is in good shape overall, free from any major damage or cracks. There is one small glued chip on the left side of the stock next to the the rear sling bar base. This is best visible in picture 12. Outside of that the stock is very solid and all of the original stock hardware is still in-place except for the sling bar and ring which has been cut-off. Why this was done we have no idea, however, a replacement part from a lessor gun would be an easy fix. The "U.S." marked buttplate is still in good shape with a functional pivoting trap with three storage locations underneath within the butt for the cleaning rod sections and broken case extractor (which is not present inside this carbine). The factory barrel band is still nice and tight to the wood and the bandspring holds it firmly in place. This is NOT a cut-down rifle stock, this is guaranteed to be a 100% correct carbine stock for this particular Springfield. The trap-door action on this Model 1877 is in perfect working order and locks up tight, the hammer still has the 3-position tumbler in perfect working order, the firing pin is free, and the trigger breaks nicely with a light pull from full-cock only.
