Here we present an antique U.S. Springfield Model 1884 Trapdoor Rifle, manufactured in 1892 by the Springfield Armory. This rifle was made in 1892, near the end of the Indian Wars and just two years after the Wounded Knee massacre. Following America’s civil conflict, the War Department sought a breech-loading rifle capable of using self-primed, metallic cartridges. Surprisingly, despite the adoption of the unsuccessful Model 1882 Chaffee-Reese, new trapdoor models continued to be produced and used until the Krag-Jorgensen was adopted in the mid-1890s.

The movement of settlers into the Great Plains resulted in conflicts with the Plains Indian tribes, known as the Sioux Wars (1854-1890). The 1875 discovery of gold in the Black Hills brought miners onto Sioux hunting grounds, prompting the US Army to intervene and leading to the Great Sioux War of 1876-77 – the last major conflict between the U.S. Army and the Sioux. Unrest with displaced Native Americans persisted, culminating in the Wounded Knee Massacre on December 29th, 1890. Trapdoor rifles remained in use through the Spanish-American War.

This specific Trapdoor was manufactured in 1892. It bears a boxed "SWP/1892" cartouche on the left wrist, identifying Samuel W. Porter, Master Armorer at the Springfield Armory. It also has "9/B/17" stamped on the stock comb and "9" on the right buttstock. The barrel and forend have been shortened to carbine length.
The overall condition is good. Strong action. The bore has some shimmer, is mostly dim, and retains serviceable rifling. “1892” dated cartouche on the left stock flat. This example spirts a solid stock with expected handling wear and evidence of use. Most metal parts have a dark brown patina. The rear sight functions but is loose and will not stand on its own. Absent cleaning rod.
