Description: VERY SCARCE U.S. SPRINGFIELD TRAPDOOR 1881 SLANT DATE 20 GAUGE FORAGER SHOTGUN THIS IS A FIRST YEAR MADE GUN SERIAL # 240. ONLY 1376 TOTAL MADE FROM 1881-1885. IT IS A CORRECT GOVERNMENT ISSUED "FORAGER" WITH ALL THE RIGHT FEATURES. 26" BARREL WITH "P" PART OF THE "VP" PROOF MARK. A VERY GOOD SMOOTH BORE WITH SOME EXPECTED SCATTERED PITTING THAT IS GENERALLY LIGHT IN NATURE. METAL SURFACES TONED A LIGHT GRAY BROWNISH PATINA. THERE IS SOME SCATTERED PEPPERING WHICH IS MOST PREVELANT ON THE TRIGGERGUARD. LOCK FUNCTIONS FINE, CRISP & ROBUST WITH CORRECT 2 CLICK HAMMER, FUNCTIONING EXTRACTOR & TRAPDOOR. THE LOCK PLATE MARKINGS ARE LIGHT BUT MOSTLY LEGIBLE. WALNUT STOCK IN VERY GOOD SHAPE, NO CRACKS WITH SOME EXPECTED WEAR, SCRATCHES & HANDLING MARKS. INSPECTORS MARK REMAINS REAR OF THE TRIGGERGUARD (PIC 18) OVERALL A VERY GOOD EXAMPLE OF THESE WESTERN FRONTIER U.S. ARMY ISSUED GUNS, AS PICTURED AND RECENTLY FOUND IN AN OLD COLLECTION.
